The European Sunday Alliance calls on all members and supporters to take action on Sunday, 4 March 2012, as the EUROPEAN DAY FOR A WORK-FREE SUNDAY.

In times of financial and economic crisis when more and more social and employment rights are coming under pressure, the work-free Sunday is a clear and visible demonstration that the people and our societies are not dependent solely on work and the economy.

The Lisbon Treaty introduces a new form of public participation in European Union policy shaping, the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI). As required by the Treaty, on a proposal from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council adopted a Regulation which defines the rules and procedure governing this new instrument (Regulation (EU) No. 211/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council 16 February 2011 on the citizens' initiative).

FEC FO and the unions of employees and managers of commerce sector from Val d'Oise and from Paris referred the BRICORAMA case to the Pontoise Court. After this action, BRICORAMA was sentenced by the court to close 3 shops in Paris and 28 shops in Ile de France on Sundays. Otherwise Bricorama would be obliged to pay a fee of 30.000€ by day of misconduct.

French trade unions in the Commerce sector (SUD, CFTC, FO, CFE-CGC, CGT) appeal against a local Decree that authorises the opening of the shopping centre "Le Millénaire" every Sunday in Aubervilliers (France). Ségécé, the company which manages this shopping centre, is not in its first attempt to open shops 7/7 days. It tried without success with another shopping centre

"Belle Epine". French trade unions say they will fight against those pushing for more Sunday openings .
