On the 14th February, 2012, a clear majority of about two-third of the municipal Council in Freiburg voted against any shop opening on Sundays after a passionate debate.
Bertrand Delanoë is supporting Work free Sunday as a principle, even if at the end the decision of opening a shop is taken depending on technical considerations like local needs.
The Committee regrets the lack of reliable statistical data on the nature and extent of the exemptions from Sunday rest that are granted by the labour inspectorate and stresses that the number of such exemptions has substantially increased.
Business openings on Sunday will only be possible, if they are interesting enough by themselves to attract al large flow of visitors. Link to the judgement
